How to read the results

One ballot.
More than one winner.

These are the official results for Irvine Valley ward, which includes Darvel—not a Darvel-only count. The ward also covers Newmilns and surrounding communities.

Since 2007, Scottish council elections have used the Single Transferable Vote. Voters rank candidates 1, 2, 3 and so on. Candidates reaching the quota are elected; surplus votes and votes from eliminated candidates then transfer according to later preferences until every seat is filled.

The chart combines the first preferences of candidates from the same party. It does not show transferred votes, and its highest party is not necessarily the election’s sole “winner” because several councillors are elected.
